Astro-1
An astronomical observatory for operation on board an orbiting Space Shuttle. The observatory consists of four telescopes. Three operate in the ultraviolet, specializing in spectroscopy, direct imaging and polarimetry, and one is a broad-band X-ray instrument. The ultraviolet instruments are operated by mission and payload specialists on board the Shuttle. The X-ray telescope is operated from the ground by Goddard Space Flight Center personnel. Astro-1 was flown successfully in December 1990.
